After testing dozens of plugins across two years of daily OctoPrint use, these are the ten I consider essential. Every one of these is free, actively maintained in 2026, and makes a tangible difference to your printing workflow.

1. Obico (AI Print Failure Detection)

Obico (formerly The Spaghetti Detective) uses a camera feed and AI to detect print failures in real time. When it spots spaghetti, layer shifts, or detached prints, it pauses the printer and alerts you. You can set it to auto-pause at high confidence levels or just send a notification for you to check manually.

The free tier includes basic detection with a community cloud server. The paid tier ($4/month) adds faster detection, unlimited camera streaming, and AI-assisted analysis. For anyone running prints unattended, which is most of us, this plugin has saved me more failed prints than I can count.

Camera placement matters: Mount your camera at a 30-45 degree angle from the print bed, with consistent lighting. The AI works best when it can see the print and the nozzle clearly. Avoid backlighting and shadows that change as the print grows taller.

Instead of the chaotic jerky time-lapses you get from a standard webcam recording, OctoLapse produces smooth, professional-looking videos where the print appears to grow magically from the bed.

Configure it to capture one frame per layer, set the camera snapshot position to a corner where the nozzle is out of frame, and let it run. The resulting videos are social media gold and genuinely useful for reviewing print progress after the fact.

3. Bed Level Visualizer

This plugin reads the mesh bed leveling data from your printer's ABL probe and displays it as a 3D topographic map. After a few prints, it predicts completion times within 2-5% accuracy instead of the 20-30% errors the default estimator produces. The "time remaining" display finally means something useful.

6. Themeify

A cosmetic but highly practical plugin that lets you customize OctoPrint's UI with dark mode, custom colors, and layout tweaks. Raspberry Pi performance: Running multiple webcam-dependent plugins (Obico + OctoLapse + Dashboard) simultaneously on a Raspberry Pi 3B can cause performance issues. A Pi 4 with 2+ GB RAM handles everything smoothly. If you're on a Pi 3, choose either Obico or OctoLapse, not both running simultaneously.

9. Preheat Button

Adds a one-click preheat button to the UI that heats the bed and nozzle to your most-used temperature preset. No more navigating to the temperature tab and manually entering values every time you want to preheat. Simple, but you'll use it multiple times every printing session.
