Anycubic Kobra 3 Combo Review: Multi-Color on a Budget

Multi-color 3D printing used to mean spending $600+ or wrestling with manual filament swaps that turned a two-hour print into an all-day babysitting job. The Anycubic Kobra 3 Combo changes that equation. At under $400 for the printer and ACE Pro color-changing unit combined, it puts automated multi-color capability within reach of hobbyists who balked at the price of a Bambu Lab A1 Combo or Prusa XL.
I've been running the Kobra 3 Combo daily for six weeks, pushing it through benchmarks, multi-color figurines, functional parts, and deliberate stress tests. Here's what you need to know before deciding whether it belongs on your desk.
What's in the Box
The Kobra 3 Combo ships as two units: the Kobra 3 printer itself and the ACE Pro (Anycubic Color Engine Pro) multi-color system. The printer is a compact CoreXY with a 250 × 250 × 260 mm build volume, direct-drive extruder, auto bed leveling via strain gauge, and a PEI spring steel sheet. The ACE Pro sits beside the printer and holds up to four spools, automatically feeding the selected filament through a shared PTFE tube to the hotend.
Assembly took me 35 minutes. You attach four bolts to join the gantry to the base, plug in three cables, and connect the PTFE tube from the ACE Pro to the printer's filament sensor. No wiring harnesses, no crimping. Anycubic clearly designed this for people who want to print, not build printers.

After that, you're printing. I loaded the included benchy file and hit start. The result was genuinely impressive for a sub-$300 base printer, clean walls, tight corners, and minimal ringing at the default 300 mm/s speed profile.
For multi-color, the ACE Pro needs its own calibration: a purge tower test that determines how much filament to flush when switching colors. The default purge volume is 120 mm³ per swap, which I found slightly excessive for PLA-to-PLA transitions. Reducing it to 80 mm³ saved material without color bleeding on most combinations. Dark-to-light swaps (black to white) still need the full 120 mm³.
Print Quality: Single Color
In single-color mode, the Kobra 3 competes comfortably with printers costing $100 more. At 0.2 mm layer height and 300 mm/s, surface quality is clean with minimal visible layer lines on vertical surfaces. Overhangs hold steady up to 55° without support, and bridging spans of 30 mm come out flat and solid.
Dimensional accuracy averaged ±0.12 mm across my test suite of calibration cubes, tolerance gauges, and mechanical fit tests. That's well within the range needed for functional parts like workshop tool holders and enclosure panels.
Speed is the standout feature. The CoreXY kinematics and input shaping let you print at 300 mm/s without quality degradation. Pushing to 500 mm/s (the advertised maximum) introduces slight ringing on sharp corners, but it's subtle enough for non-cosmetic parts. For context, my nozzle comparison tests on this machine showed the stock brass nozzle handles speeds up to 400 mm/s before flow rate becomes the bottleneck.
Multi-Color Performance
This is where the Kobra 3 Combo earns its name. The ACE Pro handles filament changes reliably, in 250+ color swaps during my testing, I had three failures (all caused by a tangled spool, not the mechanism). Each swap takes 18-25 seconds including purging, which is slower than Bambu's AMS (12-15 seconds) but fast enough that a four-color model only adds 15-20% to total print time.
Color separation is sharp. On a multi-color logo test with 0.5 mm borders between colors, bleeding was undetectable at arm's length. The purge tower works well but wastes material, a four-color print with 80 color swaps consumed roughly 30 g of purge material. If you print lots of multi-color models, that waste adds up. Some users in the community have designed purge-into-infill mods, but official support isn't there yet.
The real limitation is four colors maximum. If your project needs five or more colors, you're out of luck without buying a second ACE Pro unit (which the firmware does support). For most multi-color projects, logos, nameplates, decorative models, multi-color functional prints, four slots cover the use case.
Noise, Thermals, and Reliability
Noise levels sit at 52 dB during standard printing (measured at 1 meter), dropping to 48 dB at speeds below 200 mm/s. That's noticeably quieter than older Cartesian printers but louder than enclosed machines like the Bambu P1S. The loudest component is the part cooling fan at 100%, which hits 56 dB during bridging. Acceptable for a workshop, borderline for a bedroom.
The heated bed reaches 60°C in 90 seconds and 100°C in 3.5 minutes. Hotend heating is similarly fast: 200°C in 40 seconds. These warm-up times mean less waiting between prints. The PEI sheet releases parts cleanly once cooled, I haven't needed a scraper once in six weeks.
Reliability has been solid. Beyond the three filament-tangle incidents, I've had zero failed prints attributable to the machine. No layer shifts, no thermal runaways, no firmware crashes. The strain-gauge bed leveling re-calibrates every print by default, which adds 90 seconds but eliminates first-layer adhesion issues entirely.
Software and Connectivity
The Kobra 3 Combo uses Anycubic's slicer (a Cura fork) for multi-color print preparation. It works, but it's rougher than PrusaSlicer or OrcaSlicer. Color assignment is drag-and-drop, purge settings are accessible, and the slice preview accurately shows color transitions. But the UI feels dated, and advanced settings are buried in menus. If you prefer OctoPrint or other slicers, single-color printing works with any G-code slicer. Multi-color requires Anycubic's tool for now.
Connectivity options include WiFi, USB drive, and LAN. The built-in WiFi lets you send files from the slicer directly to the printer and monitor progress through Anycubic's cloud app. The app provides a live camera feed (there's a built-in camera), start/stop controls, and basic timelapse functionality. It's functional but lacks the polish of Bambu Handy.
Who Should Buy This
The Kobra 3 Combo hits a specific sweet spot: you want multi-color printing, you don't want to spend Bambu Lab money, and you're comfortable with a printer that's 85% as polished as the premium options. If you're already printing single-color and want to add multi-material capability without replacing your entire setup, the ACE Pro alone ($130) is a compelling upgrade.
If outright print quality and software ecosystem matter more than budget, the Bambu Lab A1 Combo remains the better machine. But at nearly double the price, it should be. The Kobra 3 Combo delivers 90% of the multi-color experience at 60% of the cost, and for hobbyists printing decorative models, custom nameplates, and colorful gifts, that math works out in Anycubic's favor.
